Timing matters

Drainage of food-rich water is most valuable for fish between mid-November and the end of April. It is important to increase the diversity of drainage timing throughout the Sacramento Valley so that out-migrating juvenile salmon can find food whenever they choose to migrate during the November to April timeframe. Thus, Drain Date will be one of the primary criteria used for scoring bid applications. Drainage during the month of February is already widespread with the end of waterfowl hunting season. February Drain Dates will be considered but will receive the lowest timing criteria score. Drain Dates prior to and after February will receive higher timing criteria scores. Flood Date is defined by the date at which the entire field achieves the target flood depth of 10 inches. Drain Date is defined by the date at which boards are pulled to start draining the field, and must be no sooner than 3 weeks after the Flood Date. Please indicate how many flood/drain cycles you expect to deliver and proposed Flood and Drain Dates for each cycle. When proposing multiple cycles, remember to factor in the time it takes to drain and re-fill your fields to the target depth between cycles.
